Take the last parting kiss,
and the wavy greeting
that I'm still sending ashore
before you turn your feet and leave!
Already the waves of the stream
are pulling briskly at my boat,
yet my tear-dimmed gaze
keeps being tugged back by longing!
And so the waves bear me forward
with unsympathetic speed.
Ah, the fields have already disappeared
where I once discovered her!
Blissful days, you are eternally past!
Hopelessly my lament echoes
around my fair homeland,
where I found her love.
See how the shore dashes past;
yet how drawn I am to cross:
I'm pulled by unnameable bonds
to land there by that little hut
and to linger there beneath the foliage;
but the waves of the river
hurry me onward without rest,
leading me out to the sea!
Ah, before that dark wasteland
far from every smiling coast,
where no island can be seen -
oh how I'm gripped with trembling horror!
Gently bringing tears of grief,
songs from the shore can no longer reach me;
only a storm, blowing coldly from there,
can cross the grey, heaving sea!
If my longing eyes, surveying the shore,
can no longer glimpse it,
then I will gaze upward to the stars
into that sacred distance!
Ah, beneath their placid light
I once called her mine;
there perhaps, o comforting future!
there perhaps I shall meet her gaze.
-
I've fallen into a trap!
The traitors!
I'll punish them so! The sentence
Will be at my pleasure ... But supposing
He has paid off the claims of the old woman?
Paid her? How? ... and then there's Antonio
Who'll refuse to give his niece in marriage
To a Figaro, of whom nothing is known.
If I play on the pride
Of that half-wit ...
Everything favours my plan ...
The dice is cast.
Must I see a serf of mine made happy
While I am left to sigh,
And him possess a treasure
Which I desire in vain?
Must I see her,
Who has roused in me a passion
She does not feel for me,
United by the hand of love to a base stave?
Ah no, I will not give you
The satisfaction of this contentment!
You were not born, bold fellow,
To cause me torment
And indeed to laugh
At my discomfiture.
Now only the hope
Of taking vengeance
Eases my mind
And make me rejoice
-
The prostrate crowd
looks at her amazed
and murmurs under its breath:
look, this is the goddess
looming up out of the shadow
and holding out her arms to us.
ZURGA
Her veil parts slightly;
what a vision, what a dream!
The crowd is kneeling.
TOGETHER
Yes, it is she, it is the goddess,
more charming and more beautiful;
yes, it is she, it is the goddess,
who has come down among us.
Her veil has parted,
and the crowd is kneeling.
NADIR
But through the crowd
she makes her way.
ZURGA
Already, her long veil
hides her face from us.
NADIR
My eyes, alas, seek her in vain.
ZURGA
She flees!
NADIR
She flees!
But what is this strange flame
which is suddenly kindled within my soul!
ZURGA
What unknown fire is destroying me!
NADIR
Your hand pushes mine away.
ZURGA
Your hand pushes mine away.
NADIR
Love takes our hearts by storm
and turns us into enemies.
ZURGA
No, let nothing part us!
NADIR
No, nothing!
ZURGA
Let us swear to remain friends!
NADIR
Let us swear to remain friends!
TOGETHER
Oh yes! Let us swear to remain friends!
We have seen her, she is the Goddess
who today led you to me,
and from now I'll keep you my promise,
close as brothers we shall be!
Great Goddess, Heaven descended,
she today has led you to me!
Now we shall tread one single path,
never again to part till death!

Nimm die letzten Abschiedsküsse,
Und die wehenden, die Grüße,
Die ich noch ans Ufer sende
Eh' Dein Fuß sich scheidend wende!
Schon wird von des Stromes Wogen
Rasch der Nachen fortgezogen,
Doch den thränendunklen Blick
Zieht die Sehnsucht stets zurück!
Und so trägt mich denn die Welle
Fort mit unerflehter Schnelle.
Ach, schon ist die Flur verschwunden
Wo ich selig Sie gefunden!
Ewig hin, ihr Wonnetage!
Hoffnungsleer verhallt die Klage
Um das schöne Heimathland,
Wo ich ihre Liebe fand.
Sieh, wie flieht der Strand vorüber,
Und wie drängt es mich hinüber,
Zieht mit unnennbaren Banden,
An der Hütte dort zu landen,
In der Laube dort zu weilen;
Doch des Stromes Wellen eilen
Weiter, ohne Rast und Ruh,
Führen mich dem Weltmeer zu!
Ach, vor jener dunklen Wüste,
Fern von jeder heitern Küste,
Wo kein Eiland zu erschauen,
O, wie faßt mich zitternd Grauen!
Wehmuthsthränen sanft zu bringen,
Kann kein Lied vom Ufer dringen;
Nur der Sturm weht kalt daher
Durch das grau gehob'ne Meer!
Kann des Auges sehnend Schweifen
Keine Ufer mehr ergreifen,
Nun so blick' ich zu den Sternen
Dort in jenen heil'gen Fernen!
Ach bei ihrem milden Scheine
Nannt' ich sie zuerst die Meine;
Dort vielleicht, o tröstend Glück!
Dort begegn' ich ihrem Blick.
-
Hai già vinta la causa!
Cosa sento?
In qual laccio cadea?
Perfidi! io voglio di tal modo punirvi,
A piacer mio la sentenza sarà.
Ma s'ei pagasse la vecchia pretendente?
Pagarla! In qual maniera?
E poi v'è Antonio
Che all'incognito Figaro ricusa
Di dare una nipote in matrimonio.
Coltivando l'orgoglio di questo mentecatto..
Tutto giova a un raggiro...
Il colpo è fatto.
Vedrò mentr'io sospiro
Felice un servo mio?
E un ben che invan desio,
Ei posseder dovrà?
Vedrò per man d'amore
Unita a un vile oggetto
Chi in me destò un affetto,
Che per me poi non ha?
Ah no! lasciar in pace
Non vo' questo contento,
Tu non nascesti, audace,
Per dare a me tormento,
E forse ancor per ridere
Di mia infelicità.
Già la speranza sola
delle vendette mie
Quest'anima consola,
E giubilar mi fa.

NADIR
Au fond du temple saint
Paré de fleurs et d'or,
Une femme apparaît!
Je crois la voir encore!
ZURGA
Une femme apparaît!
Je crois la voir encore!
NADIR
La foule prosternée
La regarde, etonnée,
Et murmure tous bas:
Voyez, c'est la déesse!
Qui dans l'ombre se dresse
Et vers nous tend les bras!
ZURGA
NADIR
Mais à travers la foule
Elle s'ouvre un passage!
ZURGA
Son long voile déjà
Nous cache son visage!
NADIR
Mon regard, hélas!
La cherche en vain!
ZURGA
Elle fuit!
NADIR
Elle fuit!
Mais dans mon âme soudain
Quelle étrange ardeur s'allume!
ZURGA
Quel feu nouveau me consume!
NADIR
Ta main repousse ma main!
ZURGA
Ta main repousse ma main!
NADIR
De nos cœurs l'amour s'empare
Et nous change en ennemis!
ZURGA
Non, que rien ne nous sépare!
NADIR
Non, rien!
ZURGA et NADIR
Jurons de rester amis!
Oh oui, jurons de rester amis!
Oui, c'est elle! C'est la déesse!
En ce jour qui vient nous unir,
Et fidèle à ma promesse,
Comme un frère je veux te chérir!
C'est elle, c'est la déesse
Qui vient en ce jour nous unir!
Oui, partageons le même sort,
Soyons unis jusqu'à la mort!
NADIR
At the back of the holy temple,
decorated with flowers and gold,
a woman appears...
I can still see her.
ZURGA
A woman appears...
I can still see her.
